2023-2024 UNIFORM POLICY
A safe and disciplined learning environment is the first requirement of a good school. The
adoption of school uniform policies will promote school safety, improve discipline, and enhance
the learning environment. New students moving into the school system will be allowed a grace
period, to be determined by the principal, to obtain dress code/uniform clothing.
The following is a list of Macon County Middle School uniform guidelines:
- Black, red, gray, navy, or white polo shirts or blouses with collars or button up dress shirts must be worn. There must be no slogans/emblems (except for Macon County School Emblems) on the shirts or blouses. All shirts and blouses must be tucked in. (Burgundy, maroon, royal blue, teal, and all other colors of blue will not be acceptable.) No oversized shirts permitted.
- Undershirts may be worn under the dress code/uniform shirt. These must be white. Turtleneck and long sleeved t-shirts may be worn under the dress code/uniform shirt and must be a solid, dress code/uniform color.
- Khaki, black, or navy uniform pants, shorts, skorts, dresses, or jumpers must be worn.
- Cargo pants with outside pockets may not be worn. No leggings, jeggings, or joggers are allowed. Shorts, skirts, dresses, and jumpers should be no shorter than 2 inches above the knee. No oversized pants are allowed. Pants must be worn at the waist. Boys and girls should not wear form fitting garments such as sweatpants, lycra/spandex, stretch, tights, or body pants. Pants should not have revealing cut-outs or holes.
- Belts must be worn in grades 6-8. Faculty and staff must be able to see the belt at all times. No oversized/designer belt buckles (regular buckles with no emblems, initials, etc…). Belts must be solid colored and must be black or brown.
- Denim of any color is not allowed. This includes vests and jackets.
- Pullover jackets, sweaters vests, or hoodies may not be worn. Students are not allowed to wear hoodies or pullover jackets under their school uniforms. Jackets/Coats with emblems may be worn to and from school; however, these must be hung up in the classroom or placed in the lockers during the school day. Light cardigans/jackets of any color with NO large emblems/logos or characters may be worn; however, cardigans/jackets must be unzipped/open. Jackets with a hood must have a full-length zipper or button front; however, students must keep them unzipped/open. No denim material allowed.
- All shoes must be enclosed both at the toe and heel. CROCS MAY NOT BE WORN. Sneakers must have shoe strings tied up. Pants are not permitted to be tucked in socks, shoes, or boots. Any straps attached to sneakers must be fastened. Shoes with more than an inch heel cannot be worn.
- Socks must be a matched pair. Socks and tights must be a solid dress code/uniform color.
- Headbands can be worn, but cannot exceed ½ inch. Students are allowed to wear no more than 2 school appropriate wristbands. Headgear is not permitted.
- Designer haircuts (i.e. names, symbols, etc.), color, or patches of color in hair are not permitted.
- Spiked jewelry, chains hooked to wallets or belts, large pendants, pierced jewelry (except stud earrings) or any other jewelry or objects that could cause injury or otherwise constitute a hazard are not permitted.
- Students must not add accessories or enhancements to the dress code/uniform. This includes hats, scarves, ties, and suspenders.
- Grooming items cannot be displayed during school hours. This includes but is not limited to hair picks, brushes, combs, etc. Grooming items will be collected to maintain a safe school environment.
- Torn, ripped, or tattered clothing may not be worn. No form fitting clothing will be allowed.
- Students must be well-groomed, clean, and neatly attired while on school campus.
- Long or spiked nails are not permitted.
- On days designated by the administration as “Activity/Event Days”, students are not permitted to wear the following: ripped or torn jeans, slides, hoodies, leggings, joggers, jeggings, cropped tops or midriff (students are not permitted to wear anything to expose their belly or waist), exposing undergarments, etc. Additional guidelines will follow as needed.
- All book bags must be clear or mesh. Book bags/tote bags are not items of personal attire.
- Book bags/tote bags must be stored in lockers when students enter the school building. They must remain in lockers during the school day. They should be retrieved from lockers and carried home when they retrieve their items in the afternoon. Book bags/tote bags may not be carried by students during the school day. Gym bags should be dropped off to the homeroom teacher.
PLEASE NOTE: New styles, fads, or items not specifically addressed may be prohibited
if deemed inappropriate by the principal or designee.
If doubts exist about an item covered by the school’s dress code, seek clarification from
school personnel before arriving at school.
